In addition to having some unique iconic landmarks, Hilliard also has the only flagpole from the World Trade Center that is not in the museum. This flagpole is located in front of the fire department on Northwest Parkway.

Hilliard Ohio History

Located in Franklin County, Hilliard got its start back in 1852 when John Read Hilliard about 10 acres of farmland in Western Franklin County and originally called the area Hilliard's Station. The town grew around the railroad route and served as the ideal shipping point for agricultural products. Up until about the mid-20th century, the railroad station and Main Street were the center of town. The post office was developed in 1854 and the village of Hilliard became incorporated in 1869 with a population of just 280 residents. Construction began on three large residential subdivisions in the 1950s bringing about explosive growth to Hilliard. The connection to the Columbus regional sewer and water system in the 1960s opened up even more development. With the completion of Interstate 270 in the early 1970s, a second wave of explosion growth came to the area and today is a mix of residential and commercial development. It offers a rich heritage of residential architectural styles and designs along the historic district of Norwich Street.

Hilliard Schools

Hilliard is part of the Hilliard City School District encompassing all of the original Brown and Norwich Township boundaries. There are 14 elementary schools, 2/6 grade schools, three middle schools, and three high schools. Some of the top rated schools include Hilliard Davidson high school, Hilliard Derby high school, Hilliard Bradley high school, and Hoffman trails elementary, all receiving top marks from parents and students alike.

"Hilliard is a great place to live. I have lived there now for almost 4 years. It is close to everything you could need, shopping, nightlife, gyms, freeways what else could you ask for! I'm looking at getting a little big bigger house to help my growing family and we have made it a point to want to stay in Hilliard because we love the area so much. The school system is great, and so diverse also to all who live in the area. Its very affordable area also so you do not feel like you have to pay an arm and leg just to get into this great area. The Homestead Metro Park is part of the Hilliard Parks and Rec Department [image shown above] As well as two public swimming pools and aquatic centers, many public baseball and soccer fields with sports activities, and a total of 27 parks throughout the Hilliard area. The Heritage Rail Trail is one of the most popular trails in the area with 45 miles of multipurpose trails surrounding Hilliard.
